Four Fundamentals We Can Learn from Buddy the Elf

Today marks seven days out from Christmas – also known around the world as International Answer the Phone Like Buddy the Elf Day. This means companies across the globe are urging employees to channel their inner Will Ferrell and inject a dose of holiday spirit into their workday communication.

It can be easy to get lost in our workdays throughout the year and approach phone calls, meetings and other communications as simple boxes to check. This approach often has a negative effect on our morale, stress levels and communication effectiveness – it’s amazing how a positive or negative interaction can affect our day and others around us.

At Select Communications, we use today as a reminder of how important it is to take a break from our to-do list and fully embrace every opportunity to interact with our clients, partners and teammates – and if that interaction starts with a “Buddy the Elf, what’s your favorite color?”, that’s okay.

Here are our four favorite tips for creating positive workplace interactions, whether they’re in the office, over the phone, on video or wearing an elf costume:

1. Enter every interaction with a positive attitude.

That doesn’t mean you have to be beaming at the start of every conversation, but entering a discussion with the mindset that the meeting, phone call or web conference will go well often leads it in the right direction.

2. Mind your body language.

Body language can strongly impact your interactions – even when you’re on the phone. Following tip number one is a proactive way to ensure physical traits like posture, voice tone and facial expressions are positive and friendly.

3. Practice active listening.

Head-nods and facial expressions help show collaborators that you’re actively listening. These gestures can also put the speaker at ease and give them confidence that their inputs are valued and helpful. In audio-based communication, reinforcement phrases like “great point” and “uh-uh” can have the same effect.

4. Smile.

A smile can go a long way in making communication a positive experience for all parties involved. Just ask Buddy the Elf.
